Abstract

Women have historically been underrepresented in STEM fields. In my analysis, I explored how children’s literature representing historical women role models empower young girls to possibly pursue STEM careers. I applied Vekiri’s et. al (2024) research on attracting girls to STEM through interactive video games displaying STEM role models to comic books. In this project, I review academic literature, historical sources, and research articles to develop an educational comic book about historical women in STEM to help support the idea that creative activities and resources displaying role models can be influential to young children, specifically young girls. I focused on women from each individual field (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) so that children can see different role models for each career. These women represent different cultural backgrounds to provide children a sense of inclusivity which can also build confidence within their perception of STEM fields. Knowing and understanding how important representation is can help shape the career choices of these young women.        Additionally, this helped me showcase the importance of historical women in STEM and how their achievements impact each individual field. Ultimately, my project’s goal presented these young women with a comic book showcasing role models that can encourage them to pursue STEM fields. This analysis can inspire young girls to pursue STEM while also promoting an increase of representation for achieving and impactful women in STEM.
