Never named by its creator, the Arch sculpture (also known as the “Pi,” the “heart of campus,” or the “abstract cow” among other names) was created by alumnus Barry Willbern as his master’s thesis project. “It was a study in combining organic and geometric shapes,” said Willbern. “I was just taking those natural shapes and seeing how they worked together.” To begin, Willbern made several models. From those, the then-president of the university, Frank Henderson "Bub" McDowell, and the head of the Art Department made their selection. The arch of the sculpture was made of concrete pressed into wire mesh. The parts on the underside of the arch are of cast aluminum. The Arch is 14 feet high and weighs over two tons. It is located north of Sowers Education South.
