Henderson Hall

Henderson Hall was constructed in 1939 with Public Works Administration funds as a female dormitory capable of housing 200 students. Originally known as East Hall, each floor featured glass-enclosed sun porches, telephone booths, launderettes, two bathrooms, and kitchenettes. During a housing shortage in the 1960s, the dorm housed both male and female students. Women were in the south wing, and men were in the north wing. The wings were divided by temporary wooden partitions. Capacity was increased by 119 during the shortage with sixteen women living on the sun porches. In 1967, the building was renamed Henderson Hall in honor of Frances Elizabeth Henderson who worked at the university for 32 years as an instructor in Business Administration and an assistant Dean of Women. When the demand for on-campus housing declined, Henderson was one of several dormitories removed from the University Housing System in 1972. After extensive remodeling over the 1976-1977 academic year, the building was converted to house the University Health Services offices, University Police Department, and various academic departments. Henderson Hall is located in the far northeast corner of campus at the intersection of Lee and Monroe Streets.
