Built at an original cost of $1.25 million, the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center was constructed to replace the aging Student Union Building. Partially funded by student fees, the three-story, 59,000 square foot facility featured a game room, meeting rooms, bookstore, cafeteria, and a post office. The building was named after Sam Rayburn, East Texas Normal College alumnus and Speaker of the House of Representatives. Due to animosity between Rayburn and President James Gilliam Gee, the building became known as the Memorial Student Center, or MSC. The plaque with the building's true name was not installed until President Gee retired. An addition to the building in the early 1970s tripled the size of the ballroom and cafeteria. The Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center was located southeast of Memorial Stadium. While the majority of the building was razed in 2009, the post office was left standing and continues to operate.
