Student Union Building

The Student Union Building, or SUB as it was commonly known, was a former officer's recreation building moved from Camp Maxey in Lamar County after World War II. The building was completely renovated and a brick façade was added. The SUB featured a large fireplace, ballroom, clubrooms, lounges, kitchen, powder room, drug store, and bookstore. After the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center opened, the SUB was remodeled for use by the Speech and Drama Departments and became known as the Speech Building until construction of the Performing Arts Center. The Student Union Building was located off of Lee Street on the northern side of campus. Today that space is used as a parking lot between the off-campus University Bookstore and Women's and Sorority Housing (F Halls).
