Abstract
Teacher turnover in early childhood child care centers continues to be a challenge across the field of early childhood education. The purpose of this study was to explore factors that contribute to child care workers in child care deserts remaining in their positions for extended periods of time. This research will provide child care center directors, parents, and other early childhood education decision-makers with information about the impact and effectiveness of teacher retention factors within the early childhood field. The researcher utilized a narrative inquiry to present the stories of teachers who have worked in their child care programs for extended periods of time. The method of procedure was conducting interviews with each teacher through the Zoom platform. The data generated the following seven emerging themes: (1) Specialized training in special needs and behavior support empowers teachers to thrive in their roles, (2) To maintain their positions, teachers receive quality professional development, (3) Compensation that reflects the complexity of early childhood education supports teachers’ loyalty and dedication, (4) Meaningful benefits support teacher retention and organizational support, (5) Intrinsic motivation received from working with children and families fosters teachers’ commitment, (6) Sufficient resources support teacher effectiveness and long-term retention, and (7) The fulfilling nature of relationships and impact motivates teachers to persist in their roles. The data collected for this study revealed that their love for the children kept child care teachers employed at their facility. Additional key factors for retention included creating and sustaining strong relationships with their peers, management, and families. Receiving management support, bonuses, and increased professional development to work with their students were also key factors in the teachers staying in their positions for extended periods of time.
